| Settling In Again |

For a while, I believed I had already settled in my apartment in Jersey. It has transformed from a bare-bones necessities-only apartment to one that feels like it was expected to be lived in - Corelle dishes instead of paper plates, silverware instead of plastic sporks and chopsticks, real furniture instead of styrofoam filled boxes. We even got our own TV, DVD player, and cable and internet connection. It took a full three months before we finally stopped stealing wireless internet from our neighbors in 3-P. It felt like having a home.
The dinners by myself or just with Van slowly became less lonely, more familiar, relaxing even. I've graduated from takeout, to TV dinners, to almost cooking (aka "add one egg" - it's still a notch better than microwaving). I now bake (add one egg and a stick of butter) cookies. The never ending stampede of chores have now screeched to meet more "normal" expectations of cleanliness - I'm still by far neater than most people, but no longer feel compelled to take out the garbage the minute it is full, or clean the kitchen on an inflexible do or die 2-week interval.
But I have to challenge my preconceived notion of what I had considered a settled in state. For the longest time, though I have begun to see Jersey as home, it never fully was. Everything I own is cheap, light, and disposable - ready to be discarded in the blink of an eye if needed be. All my plans revolved around "But what's the point, I will be leaving soon." I lived here to work with MMG - and I had neglected a part of me in the craziness of travel and career and being in a new place with no friends who really knew the real me.
I guess all I needed was time; time to figure out how to keep work at work, and to stuff life in all the other cracks in my calendar. Time to reach a point where work didn't seem worth it, where the money did not seem worth lost weekends. Time to join bike tours and get my own Biachi Brava to ride around town and discover the dry cleaners, potholes and marina. Time for winter to wash away into spring and coast into summer where there's enough sunshine for a leisurely stroll to the shoe repair place and the happy discovery of a magical tea shop with purple, turquoise and orange walls and tin ceilings. I have friends who are slowly, seeing the person I am when I'm not in a smart tan suit but rather, a beach bum with flip flops, rose-colored glasses and a pet elephant.
Just when I was so sure I was going be be back to Manila by June next year, I settle in and realize - I may be watching the leaves turn red and gold a few more times. |
